Heimat is a Space in Time
Heimat ist ein Raum aus Zeit
Special Screenings
In a non-celebratory mood, German filmmaker Thomas Heise traces a century of German history through the story of four generations of his own family. Like a film archaeologist, Heise gathers documents that form the essence of his family history, which is also that of an entire country. East Germany, the GDR, is his Heimat—a German word that is difficult to translate into any language, meaning homeland, home, or a "space in time," as the title of the film itself defines.

Thomas Heise
Thomas Heise was born in Berlin in 1955. In 1975, he started to work as an assistant director at the DEFA studio and studied at the Academy of Cinema and Television of Potsdam-Babelsberg. He worked as a professor at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, and he was also the director of the Film and Media Arts section at the Academy of Arts Berlin-Brandenburg. He died this year in May.
